If you have been marginally acquainted with me for any length of time, you likely know that “write more blogs about my crafting journeys” is a common theme. And yes, one I am enacting again this year.
However, if you also ever spent any time on the blog in the past, you might have noticed things look a little different. I migrated the blog1 over to Substack in an attempt to make blogging a) easier and b) less overwhelming.
I love talking about making things. It’s the reason I went to work for a knitting magazine and craft publisher, and why I kept on working for a yarn producer before I realized that there is absolutely such a thing as “too much of a good thing.” But lately I’ve found it really difficult to motivate myself to actually write about the things, and upon some reflection, I landed on a few reasons.
Wordpress was too much for me at this point
I really love the flexibility and functionality of having a self-hosted Wordpress blog, but having that was way more than I needed for what I wanted to do. I wasn’t looking to monetize any part of my blog (and still am not, this is mostly just for me and for you if you want to follow along), I didn’t really need to know nor care about what kind of traffic I was getting, and all the bells and whistles were just too much when a basic kazoo would do. So the idea of logging into write a whole blog and do all the SEO hocus pocus (which I already have to do in my day job) was overwhelming.
Also the world is just overwhelming
I’m pretty sure that speaks for itself.
So anyway, here we are again, attempting this blogging thing to keep a record of what I’m making. For posterity or something.
I just finished weaving2 in the ends of my Snowflake Vest (Ravelry link) and I love it. It’s super cozy and very soft.
I’ve separated for the body and sleeves of my Tilia Yoke sweater, designed by Okmin Park of Knitree. I am absolutely loving this project, even though I did a dumb and got yarn that’s just a bit too light for this project and therefore had to do a ton of math. But it seems to be working out.
And finally, this year, I am determined to make some progress on, if not outright finish, this Charley Harper cross stitch I started years ago. My goal for January (which yes, ends in three days) is to finish the little bird. I am further along than what is shown in this image, so it’s doable.
I migrated a fraction of the blog over. There were more than 1,000 posts. There are now about 50 some odd—I think, I didn’t really count. RIP weeks and weeks of Friday Finds.
Weaving in enough ends for me to wear it without them dangling out the bottom.
I love the yoke on that tilia sweater SO MUCH. And I agree, WordPress is a lot of bells and whistles when I really just want to press send and have my stupid thoughts live on the Internet for people to maybe read if they want.
