Sewing a Bathing Suit in a Snow Storm
Let me be perfectly clear—I was inside, sewing a bathing suit, while the snow storm was outside. I worry that you might have thought I was sewing outside. But, as much as possible, I don’t go outside.
(Hi, I didn’t sleep well due to Big Mad Muscle Pain so this blog is a little extra unhinged.)
So then why would I sew a bathing suit inside my house while a snow storm swirled outside my house? Well, I am going to be going outside. Specifically on a family vacation which involves a very large ship and Caribbean islands and a bathing suit that a) I like and b) that fits seems like it would be a good idea to have.
PLUS this trip is a Disney Marvel cruise—or a Marvel Disney cruise—I don’t know which or if it matters but the important part is that I wanted a bathing suit in the Captain Marvel colors and so I had to make it myself.
I used the Amalfi pattern from Made for Mermaids which is a delightful reversible three-piece suit1. Yes. Three pieces. The top is made of two pieces that overlap, and since every piece is reversible, you have a bunch of combinations with only three pieces. Because I had Captain Marvel on the brain, I went with navy, red, and gold and it turns out that depending on the combinations (and if you squint a bit), I can have a Captain Marvel-inspired look, along with an Iron Man and Captain America. Or a solid navy, no nonsense bathing suit.2
No, there’s no modeled shots in this post. Did you miss the bit about the snow storm? It’s freaking cold here.
The actual process of sewing these pieces was a lot easier than I thought they would be. Yes, the swim material is slippery, but honestly it’s easier to work with than rayon challis (that fabric is gorgeous but a BITCH). The pattern had a lot of photos and pretty clear instructions.
The part about burrito/rolling the pieces to make them reversible required a whole lot of head scratching and trusting of the process but once I did it on the first piece it was so easy.
I have a mini-vacay capsule wardrobe planned so I’ll post again with modeled shots once the vacation happens. That is, if I go outside of the cabin—one of my nephews and I are both super excited for the balcony and the room service, so I could maintain my “stay inside” ways.
The pattern is technically four pieces, with a tie, but I’m pretty sure I would lose that so I haven’t sewn it yet.
The bathing suit may lack nonsense but I’m brimming with it.
