I spent all of my last blog post writing about my plans for crafting in 2020 and those plans have already changed. I blame Chris Evans and his cabled sweater.
See, a few weeks ago, a couple of my friends were talking about The Sweater. You know the one.
I get it. It’s a good sweater. Who doesn’t love cabled goodness in a sweater?
The friends in question were discussing whether they could or should knit cabled sweaters. Obviously the answer is “yes,” but I understood their hesitation. Both are new to sweater knitting (mostly because I made them try it) and though they have almost ten finished sweaters in just over a year between the two of them (I made them try it and they really liked knitting sweaters), they haven’t tackled a cabled sweater yet.
Hence our first knit-along of 2020 was born. I collected some relatively beginner-friendly sweater patterns (and I’ll include them below for anyone else who is interested), we discussed pattern choice and yarn selection, and settled on a pattern that we’re going to start… sometime in January (we’re big on plans and a little light on details).
Some sweater pattern choices
We’re knitting Bronwyn by Melissa Wehrle! I love Melissa’s designs, and I love the mix of classic cables with texture in this raglan pullover. I’m also excited that my friends are going to get to learn new techniques and construction methods (including a little bit of seaming because I’m that mean girl who makes people at least try seaming just a bit). We’ll be using Kelbourne Woolens Scout, which is 100% wool like the original yarn and has similar yardage and gauge. I imagine it will show off the cables beautifully.
Feel free to join us if you’d like! I’ll be sharing my journey here and on Instagram with the hashtag #bronwynkal and am happy to help answer questions anyone may have.
If you’re looking for more cabled goodness, check out the short list below!

- Journey to the Cape by Annie Lupton
- Na Craga by Alice Starmore (limited sizing)
oooh this is a good round up of cabled goodness, and I love that Bronwyn sweater!! I am the world’s slowest knitter and already have a bunch of things I need to knit, otherwise I would definitely join in. I’ll have to live vicariously!
I mean I have a ton of things I need to knit as well and yet. (And yet.) Thanks for the encouragement Julie!
