Seems to be the time of year when designers are flooding the interwebs with amazing fall-inspired designs. I’ve collected a handful of some of my recent favorites, but there have been so many I’m sure I missed a few great finds. Be sure to email me (threadpanda + gmail) if you come across something you’d like to see here!
- There’s a totally rad issue of Tangled out, and it’s stuffed to the brim with 80s inspired patterns—mostly socks. I’m not partial to socks. Nope. Not at all. My picks? Stefanie Bold’s Berlin just take my breath away, Rebecca Blair’s Bowie are reminiscent of by-gone golden years, and The Go Gos by Carmen Oliveras are perfect vacation knitting. I also really dig the spray-paint technique Melissa Somerville used on Prince, but I couldn’t think of a suitable punny descriptor—”Little Red Corvette” and “Raspberry Beret”? Maybe these socks are so awesome they’d make Doves Cry? …yes, I am easily amused.
- Jared Flood thinks people don’t knit (or maybe it’s don’t want to knit) in the summer, so he created Wool People, a collection of patterns from established and up-and-coming designers focused around that knitterly staple, wool (bit o’ trivia for you, flax and silk were among the first of the fibers to be truly knitted). Maybe that bit about not knitting in the warmer months is mostly true, but I think most of us just choose lighter fibers and projects that don’t sit on our laps (unless you’re me and you crochet a wool afghan in the summer; that was last year’s insanity). You can’t quite deny that this is a pretty splendid collection, regardless your feelings on summer and knitting: Just look at Levenwick by Gudrun Johnston, Holl by Kirsten Johnstone, Shadow by Olga Buraya-Kefelian, or Vega by Alexis Winslow and you’ll see that timeless, traditional silhouette with a modern bent that we all know and love about Jared’s own designs.
- I’m a sucker for colorwork and socks and free things: Butterflies are Free by Rose Hiver is all three, and adorable to boot.
- Estelle is a sweet little off-the-shoulder top with a super eye-catching yoke and short sleeves.
- Even more amazing than the awesome that is a crocheted Queen Amidala is the fact that the headdress fits perfectly. The force is strong in Nancy J! God I’m a nerd.
- Imogen, Immie, and Imogen Cowl by Carrie Bostick Hoge uses Quince and Co.’s Tern with my favorite stitch pattern ever, the Frost Flowers stitch (at least to look at, I’ve yet to knit it; it’s also used in Kitman Figueroa’s Jaali shawl, and we won’t discuss the fact that I can identify and name stitch patterns, okay?). I need.
- Your moment of zen: Tilt Hat by Jennifer Tallapaneni.
oh my god, those butterfly socks? Queued… for when I feel really, really, really brave in my knitting. Those are gorgeous!
Love the hat. So tootsie!
It really is!
1) All those socks are fabulous. I might have to try a pair of Berlins.
2) Jared Flood can bite me. I’d like to see him spend some time in the South. The few weeks of summer he gets in NYC? We get it for 9 months. We still knit year round, thankyouverymuch. Even without his annoying commentary, I’m still not sure I’d like the Wool People collection, but that’s just my personal taste/style/preference.
3) Amidala! Love it!
4) I totally nailed that as Frost Flowers, too, no worries. It’s very unique, but also very widespread. It’s even in Doctor Who!
1) do it. bonus points if you listen to a Berlin song that isn’t “Take My Breath Away” while knitting them (not on repeat, just over the course of knitting, one listen ;))
2) I know, I know. I do love a lot of those patterns, though, regardless of the “no knitting in hot weather” assumption of his.
4) WHERE IS IT IN DOCTOR WHO?!
Amy Pond’s first red scarf is in Frost Flowers! The one in VoV and VatD, not the second one which is in TPO/TBB. Here’s an example on Rav: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Bidibid/frost-flowers It’s gorgeous, but I’ll definitely be making the second one since it’s worsted and much simpler. Two-sided lace would be a bit taxing right now, methinks. But I can still ogle!
OMG, as if this wasn’t already my favorite stitch pattern. Hm, I had planned a something else for your birthday knit, but maybe I need to go buy some red yarn now… 😉
[…] something (not telling you what, she will, after all, have more birthdays), but then in a recent Friday Finds, in which I was babbling about the Frost Flowers stitch pattern, she pointed out that a scarf worn […]
