Finished object alert!
Usually I try to not harp too much on my appearance in FO pics, as you’re supposed be focused on the knitting, not the person wearing the knitting, but I’m really wishing that I had bothered with make-up before having my friend Drew take photos of me wearing my Whisper Cardigan. However, I decided to not bother with make-up, since at the time I was bothering more with the internal debate of should I or shouldn’t I cut off my head to alleviate the horrors of an allergy attack, which seems a common malady up here in Colorado.
Obviously, I opted for keeping my head attached (and I must say, I do like my hair in these photos; I was experimenting) and am delighted to talk about my Whisper Cardigan. I had to make a few modifications to my cardigan. First, I went from a size 7 needle to a size 6 needle, to account for my typically loose gauge. Then, I started out knitting the 24″ size (if you’ve never looked at this pattern, the sizes are only related to the width of the back, since it’s really more of a shrug than a cardigan), but then determined that it was going to be too wide across the back and knit the back part according to the instructions for the 22″ size.
This was very much an “experimental” project for me. I experimented more with backwards knitting—success! I experimented with purling Continental style in the ribbing section—success! I also experimented with ways to make knitting easier, by gently blocking the main piece before attempting to pick up the stitches for the ribbing, with the idea that doing so would make it easier to pick up said stitches—once again, a success! Once I really got started working on this cardigan, it was a breeze to knit. And thankfully the laceweight dried really fast, so while I washed and blocked it Friday evening, I was able to wear it out and about all day Saturday, to meet up with a Ravelry friend and to keep warm at the roller derby bout that night.
This makes four garments finished, or two-thirds of my goal for this year! I wonder what I’ll work on next.
Some details: Whisper Cardigan by Hannah Fettig, originally published Interweave Knits, Spring 2009. The yarn is Malabrigo Lace in Pagoda Red, and I only used maybe one and a half skeins; I still need to weigh the remainder of the second skein. I used size 6 (4 mm), 3 (3.25 mm), and 2 (2.75 mm) needles.
